The three versions are <1491 (long), 1511 (13 refrains) and 1530 (short) Painting by Sun Chengmin1

A servant carrying a rustic staff observes as two gentlemen drink wine. The inscription running across the top of the painting, right to left, first gives the title, "Seeing Off".2 It then quotes the famous poem, the full title of which is Seeing off Yuan Er to Anxi, by Wang Wei (701 - 761).3 After this the painter, Sun Chengmin,4 writes his own name and adds his seal.

3. 渭城朝雨浥輕塵。
客舍青青柳色新。
勸君更盡一杯酒。
西出陽關無故人。
The morning rain at Weicheng dampens the light dust,
At the inn the lush green color of the willows is renewed.
This moves the gentlemen again to offer up a cup of wine.
Going west through Yangguan there will be no old acquaintances.   (Return)

4. 習硯齋主人(孫)承民作 By (Sun) Chengmin, master of the Studio for Practicing with an Inkstone"
("Practising with an inkstone" means mixing ink in preparation for doing calligraphy. After this the seal has the artist's surname, Sun.   (Return)
