Music for Meditation and
self-cultivation
A narrated performance introducing the Chinese Silk-string Zither Dizzy's San Diego, 344 Seventh Ave., San Diego, California Sunday, 24 October 2004 at 7.00 PM |

Program Introduction
This program uses narration and qin ("chin") play to introduce the music and social setting of the qin within the context of the Four Arts of the Chinese Scholar; there is also commentary on historically informed qin performance. It is informal, perhaps somewhat akin to the old elegant gathering in which people would be talking about art as well as playing it or displaying it.
In constrast, the program Music from Ming Dynasty Handbooks, at NSI Wednesday evening October 27th, is a purely musical (with some song) event introduced by a printed program with commentary on the melodies and their background. During this performance the audience should have the feeling of sitting and participating silently (a good Daoist concept) in a scholar's studio as he expresses age-old concepts through music.
