Zui Weng Cao (Old Toper's Melody, or Old Toper's Lament)
Used as lyrics for Zui Weng Yin and Zui Weng Cao; calligraphy by Deng Yuping 1 |
醉翁操書法
鄧玉平 1 ; 見 醉翁吟 |
Calligraphy for Zui Weng Cao (expand) |
At right are four panels with calligraphy of a famous poem by
Su Dongpo about
Ouyang Xiu. In Deng's calligraphy a few characters have been changed. The original poem is
translated in the Introduction to Zui Weng Yin.
琅然清圓,誰彈響空山?
醉翁嘯詠,聲和流泉。
While residing in the 琅琊 Langya mountains (Langya also written 瑯琊 and 琅玡), near modern 滁州 Chuzhou 100 km northwest of Nanjing, Ouyang Xiu had built a pavilion which he made famous through his essay An Account of the Old Toper's Pavilion. The photo below left shows a modern attempt to recreate this pavilion. There are also a number of classical paintings giving various artists' views of this pavilion. The one below right is by 仇英 Qiu Ying (1494 - 1552). Below that is one by the Japanese painter 池大雅 IKENO Taiga (1723 - 1776). Click on each image below for further details. |
Footnotes (Shorthand references are explained on a
separate page)
1.
Deng Yuping 鄧玉平
I found this set of four scrolls in a shop at 琅琊山 Langya Mountain Park. The shopkeeper said Deng Yuping is a contemporary artist and calligrapher from 景德鎮 Jingdezhen in northwestern Jiangxi province. The park itself commemorates Ouyang Xiu's residence in the Langya mountains. The park has a number of pavilions, one of which is called 醉翁亭 Zuiweng Ting (see above). The original pavilion was said to have been made for Ouyang Xiu by the monk 智遷 Zhi Qian.
