柳遠 Liu Yuan (509 - 539), from 河東解 Hedong Jie, was a son of 柳玄達 Liu Xuanda, 459 - 501. At the beginning of the reign of 孝武 Xiaowu (r. 500 - 516) of the 元魏 Toba Wei (capital city then Luoyang), he was 儀同開府 Yitong Kaifu (a senior military rank), taking part in military matters. He was a good qin player and heavy drinker. He had the rank of 挽郎 wanlang under 孝明帝 Wei emperor Xiaoming (r.516 - 528). 有文詠放情其間 He had literary chanting during which he could release his emotions (?). 後客遊(項城)卒 Later as a guest wandering (in Xiangcheng, Henan) he died.
柳諧 Liu Xie (503 - 528 ; see Xu Jian, QSCB, p.42 [Chapter 4A]), Liu Yuan's younger brother, had great learning and was good at playing the qin. 以新聲手勢 He used new sounds and hand techniques. All the gentlemen in the capital studied carefully from him. He was appointed to be a 著作佐郎 zhuzuo zuolang deputy official in the literary department.
The original Qin Shi essay is rather brief:
