02. Defining Gong Mode
- Standard tuning:2 5 6 1 2 3 5 6
宮意 1
Gong Yi

This modal prelude may actually be the beginning of what is intended as a trilogy that consists of modal prelude, melodic prelude and main melody, as follows:

  1. This gong modal prelude (also consider using the 1597 Gong Yi for this)
  2. Xiuxi Yin (Spring Purification Melody)
  3. Yang Chun (Sunny Spring)

Also see the commentary with Shenpin Gong Yi, including a tracing chart.

Although the transcription linked below pairs the melody with lyrics, the original had none. However, as described here under the introduction to Shenpin Gong Yi, a number of modal preludes did have lyrics added, and so appropriate lyrics have been borrowed and adapted here from other gong modal preludes in a way that allows them to be paired following the traditional pairing method

This has been done because the lyrics concern spring, and here the modal prelude sets the tone for a trilogy that continues with the short melody Xiuxi Yin (Spring Purification Intonation), which in turn introduces the main melody, Yang Chun (Sunny Spring).
