Art Illustrating Guqin Melodies | 聽猗蘭 Listen to Yi Lan, from my CD / 首頁 |
Illustrations for Yi Lan (Flourishing Orchid) | 猗蘭圖 |
A painting by 白雲立 Bai Yunli | Confucius sees a solitary orchid (expand; closeup) |
These illustrations also apply to the melodies Yilan Cao in 1511 and the You Lan in 1525. Note that until at least the 12th century the Chinese word "蘭 lan" probably did not refer to orchids at all but rather to a plant or flower valued much more for its smell than for its appearance.
The painting at right is based on traditional illustrations such as
the one below from 孔子聖蹟圖 Traces of the Sage Confucius,
a woodblock-illustrated book about the life of
Confucius.
