Qin Bags or Covers
Traditional qin cases |
琴囊、琴套 1
Three qin covers: back, side, front 3 |
Artistic representations often show scholars walking along carrying a qin that is covered by a bag. Perhaps even more often the qin is being carried by a qin servant or other worker. Sometimes it may even be hanging from a pole. Here are some examples from this site:
Other times the servant may simply be standing by, holding it.2
Qin bags can be padded and ornate or plain and thin. My own, shown at right, have fine silk on the outside, raw silk for the inner lining, and padding in between (foam rubber or silk floss).
Modern ones may be sturdier, as with the soft cover qin cases here.
