This article concerns several members of the Lei family of Sichuan, still famous for their qins. Xu Jian discusses them and other Tang dynasty qin makers in QSCB, Chapter 5c (pp.77 - 79).

Some articles in Qinshu Cunmu mention Lei Wei's qins. For example, see:

The biographical entry for Song emperor Huizong relates the well-known story of famous guqin attributed to Lei Wei called Spring Thunder.

The entry in Qinshi Bu begins:3

Lei Wei was from 西蜀 Western Sichuan. He excelled at making qins, not only from 桐 pawlonia. If he encountered a big wind or snow he would go alone to 峨眉 the Emei Mountains drinking wine. He would put on a raincoat and cap, go deep into the forest, and listen to the sounds. If the sounds coming from a tree was 連延悠颺 protracted and soaring he would cut it to make qins. It would be more beautiful than (qins made from pawlonia.... (translation incomplete)

This rather lengthy entry includes instructions from a old man [ghost?], and gives the names of some other makers.

The original entry (Qinshi Bu #76) begins:

雷威西蜀人，善製琴，不必皆桐。遇大風雪，獨往峨眉，酣飲，著蓑衣，入深林中，聽其聲。連延悠揚者，伐之以為琴，妙過於桐。 又嘗斲琴，無為山中以指候之五音。未得正躊躕間，忽一老人在傍指示曰：「上短一分，頭豐腰殺，巳日施漆，戊日設絃，則庶可鼓矣。忽不見，自後如法斵之，無不佳絕，世稱【雷公琴】」。雷氏以琴世其家。前乎威者，有雷霄、雷儼與馮昭齊名，玄宗返蜀，首詔儼待詔門下，馮昭善攻鬻之，不售節度使盧公鈞。聞之，見重，受一張，仍贈之詩，自是履滿馮氏門矣。

後乎威者有累珏，累文，雷會，雷迅等。又蜀之郭亮，江南之沈鐐、張鉞皆斲琴名手也。__寶曆(825 – 827)間人亮
