#3. Left hand finger techniques (左手指法第三; I/97b)

  1. 按     :   按也

  2. 奐     :   換字

  3. 弓     :   引字

  4. 卜     :   綽字

  5. 需、犭:   並猱字 (臑 seems to be an old form of 猱 nao )
    (大指)臑,取聲,在大指節間,兩首適相應,得聲(如)圓珠。此之為猱。

  6. "女寸" :  對按字

  7. "不力":  不動字

  8. 隹:  推字:推絃出外有聲謂之推出 (if a left finger already stopping a string) pushes the string out to make a sound it is called "tui chu"

    Continue #19 那字 ("the character nuo" on the lower page at right:
    謂得聲後以指那動,往來各一聲。須軟著腕子,腕動則有聲,仍更指稍下不動也。
    After producing the sound, the finger performs the "" movement, making one sound in each direction. You must relax the wrist; when the wrist moves the sound is produced, but meanwhile the fingertip itself hardly moves at all.
    "那" here means "pleasing"; as such it is pronounced "nuo" ("ná" in Middle Chinese). Is this perhaps comparable to a
    定吟 ding yin?

  20. 寸   散字
    中指着十徽以掌寄七弦外虚籠其絃也。
    "With middle finger resting at the 10th hui, beyond the seven strings, emptily "envelop" the strings.

2. Explanations by translator
See comments concerning the structure of the original text. This section continues what is in some versions of this handbook a section (see QQJC I/94 - 103) that is considered either as a continuation of Folio 5 or of Folio 6. From pp. 94-101 it has a section with no overall title but with 24 numbered entries on a variety of themes, including finger techniques and rules that should be followed.
