Guqin: The Incredible Instrument of Silk and Wood (1950-1970)1 | 絲桐神品 |
Guqin recordings2 from a project initiated by Zha Fuxi through what is now the Chinese National Academy of Arts (CNAA) 3 | Sitong Shenpin |
The set of 30 CDs (image from Taobao 4) |
Fortunately it has been possible to download the relevant information on these recordings from the Library of the Chinese National Academy of Arts website.5 These were combined here into two pdf files. These files are linked here. In addition the melody lists are in searchable and linkable text form below, and the bios (short introductions, actually) are in a searchable and linkable text form on this page.
The recordings themselves are grouped by player, and the players are organized in a generally chronological manner based on their birthdate. However, there are inconsistencies and for at least 12 people their dates are unknown.
As with Jue Xiang the source of the melody (such as the handbook or the teacher) may be given, but the books have no introductions to the themes or stories connected to any of the actual melodies. Also, but unlike with Jue Xiang, no specific information is given about the dates of recording.6

Sitong Shenpin, 1950-1970 (from China Publishing Group)
The project carried out by Zha Fuxi is dated to 1955. As for why the 274 recordings here in 絲桐神品 Sitong Shenpin are said to date from "1950 to 1970", perhaps the Institute had already made a few recordings before Zha Fuxi began his project in 1955; and he also continued this collection work (and the related editing) after the project officially ended. Presumably, though, the outbreak of the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) brought these old style recordings to an end, though perhaps also leading to such works as Zha Fuxi's own Great Leap Forward Song.

The Chinese National Academy of Arts (中國藝術研究院)
The recordings here came from a project of collecting guqin instruments, other materials and recordings led by Zha Fuxi said to have begun in the mid 1950s. This project would have taken place within the National Academy of Music (中國音樂研究所 Zhongguo Yinyue Yanjiu Suo). The materials now belong to Chinese National Academy of Arts, a research institution formed in 1980 by combining the National Academy of Music with the 中國戲劇研究院 National Academy of Traditional Opera and the 中國美術研究所 National Academy of Fine Arts.
The names and in particular their translations change, making tracing the precise history difficult. Plus, nowadays an internet search for the National Academy of Arts usually directs you to only the fine arts academies such as the 中國美術學院 China Academy of Fine Art (Hangzhou and Shanghai) or the 中央美術學院 Central Academy of Fine Art (Beijing). Confusion is increased by some of the same institutes having versions in Taiwan.

Recordings from the project
Considering the dates and places of the recordings, the fidelity here is remarkably good. Quite likely in a number of places the sound was cleaned up, but when done, it was done by someone who understood the original sound and was able to bring it out in a natural way.

Acquiring a set
(from Taobao)
A friend bought this set for me in China and carried it here (all 10 books). Otherwise, to buy products through Taobao from outside of China usually requires going through an agent.

Details of the set
The two pdfs linked here and above may have to be downloaded to be searchable. Once again, they include (in both Chinese and English):
Here, for example, is the ToC for Book 1; change the pagination for the other books accordingly.
Further details
Although the 274 recordings in this set amount to far fewer than the 645 in Jue Xiang, it still has quite a few recordings that are not in the larger set.
The recordings are grouped by player, and the players are organized somewhat chronologically based on their birthdate, but with some inconsistencies and with a number for whom that information is not available. The earliest birthdate here is 1869, the latest confirmed birthday apparently being 1941 (compare Jue Xiang).
As for the actual dates of the recordings, the title of the set of books accompanying the recordings suggests they were all done between 1950 and 1970 (and mostly 1955 or after); and apparently all were done through the National Academy of Arts. However, beyond this there do not seem to be any further specifics.

Differences between 絲桐神品 Sitong Shenpin and 絕響 Jue Xiang
Differences include:
More specifically:
For details see the asterix marks (*) in the players lists for the two sets of recordings (below and here).
Diifferences between the content of the two sets partly reflect the fact that Jue Xiang recordings include pieces from many different places and times while Sitong Shenpin only includes ones from recordings connected in some way to Zha Fuxi's research project (apparently none before 1950 or after 1970). Also, the larger number of recordings in Jue Xiang are due to its having multiple versions many melodies and even multiple versions over time of one person's of a single piece.
Here are some noteworthy examples of recordings Sitong Shenpin, in spite of its smaller size, has that are not in Jue Xiang.
In addition, although there are an unknown number of other recordings here that are also available in Jue Xiang, many of these are either a different version or a different interpretation. Thus, for example, here there are six examples of Mei Hua San Nong while in Jue Xiang there are 33; some of the latter come from different tablatures while others could simply be different renditions by people who learned from the same teacher.
As for differing lengths given for recordings that are included in both sets, where the melodies have only slightly differing lengths it could be that the versions played have a somewhat different interpretation, or it could be that the piece is from a source that had quite a different version. If someone wishes to study the significance of these differences, hopefully indices such as those here would be of some help.
